Welcome to my page with yoga and mindfulness resources for menstrual support

There is growing awareness that menstrual issues like period pain, heavy periods, PMS, PMDD, fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS and amenorrhea are significant health conditions. And that these are common, but are not normal.

Too often women’s menstrual health concerns are dismissed and women feel they should just put up with the pain, fatigue, and other debilitating symptoms. That doesn’t have to be the case.

There are similarities between many menstrual conditions (and major differences of course). Yoga practices of gentle movement, beneficial breathing, mindfulness and restorative relaxation can help across a range of conditions. These practices work by tapping into our mind-body connection, allowing us to re-set our nervous system and to dial down our stress response. As a result, we can feel more relaxed, with less pain, and can cope with things better.

How can yoga help with endo, fibroids or PMDD?

Symptoms of conditions like endometriosis, fibroids and PMDD can often feel worse when we have more stress (and cortisol) in the body, more inflammation, and less good sleep. When our body gets stuck in a chronic mode of being on high alert, like a smoke alarm going off at the slightlest whiff of burnt toast, everything feels worse.

So we need to 'down regulate' our nervous system, dial down the smoke alarm setting, and do things which help activate the relaxation response instead.

Calming breathing techniques which have a longer exhale, are beneficial as it's the exhale which helps us get into our parasympathetic nervous sysem. Mindfulness and meditation can also help create feelings of calm and relaxation. And yoga movements can help relieve lower back pain, pelvic pain, and also encourage the body to feel safe whilst moving.

What special resources are available?

The yoga videos and handouts are mainly focused on things that are calming, soothing, relaxing, and supportive. They will hopefully help activate your 'rest and digest' response, and thus help reduce levels of inflammation, experiences of pain, and feelings of stress and anxiety.

You can access the special resources with the menstrual support membership. This is an annual membership of only £20 and gives exclusive access to the menstrual support resources.

I have multiple large fibroids and use yoga movements, breath work, mindfulness and restorative relxation to help manage the symptoms, along with my holistic approach incorporating nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes.

The videos below are from my main video library. These are the free shortish ones of 10-15 minutes.

They are generally open level but you should always be mindful whether something is appropriate for you. If in doubt skip the pose!

You can also purchase individual pre-recorded yoga classes in my online library.

About Alyson

I’m Alyson Tyler and I’m a qualified yoga teacher and massage therapist offering yoga, meditation and wellbeing courses in Dumfries and online.

I have been teaching yoga for 17 years.

I qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga in 2010, having attended my first yoga classes in college in 1991, and not stopped since!

In 2017 I qualified as a massage therapist.

Away from work I enjoy being outdoors, either walking, cycling (leisurely), jogging (also leisurely), hugging trees, and exploring new places. I love eating good vegan food, listening to live music, spending time with my cat, reading, and relaxing in my garden.

I have multiple fibroids, and am finding ways to manage the symptoms. I have experienced pelvic pain, bloating, hip pain, random leg pain, bladder issues and heavy periods. Certain yoga poses became deeply uncomfortable for me e.g. shoulder stand, any prone poses (lying face down on floor), occasionaly forward folds especially deep ones like child's pose. I understand the challenges faced if you have fibroids, heavy periods and PMS, and can imagine what you experience with endometriosis, adenomyosis and PMDD.
