I’m a qualified and insured massage therapist offering massage in Dumfries, as well as being a yoga teacher.
I focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere where you can relax as soon as you come in through the door. I provide a relaxing, safe and peaceful space for your massage treatment so that you can fully unwind and enjoy the experience.
The massage treatment is tailored to each person’s requirements but primarily involves massage techniques to soothe the body, mind and soul.
The massages I offer are suitable for:
feeling more relaxed
restoring health and wellbeing
general pampering and ‘me-time’
people affected by stress and tension
shoulder and neck issues
lower back issues
people affected by long-term pain, chronic fatigue, long Covid etc
Modern theories about the benefits of massage focus on the whole person, rather than single muscles, and I take time to listen to you and understand the key things going on in your life and what you are looking for from the massage.

Cost and length of the massage session
• 30 minutes £25
• 45 minutes £35
• 60 minutes £45 (full body)
For 30/45 minute sessions people tend to opt for neck, back and shoulders, but this can vary depending on what you need.
For your own planning, please allow around 15 minutes extra to allow for the chat before the massage, time afterwards for getting changed etc.
Gift vouchers are available. I accept payment in cash, cheque, bank transfer and online by invoice. To book or ask further questions, use the details on the ‘contact me’ page.
I have limited availability with appointments mainly at weekends or possibly a couple of evenings in the week.
Massages take place in my home in relatively central Dumfries.
Massages are for women only, or for male yoga students who I know.

“Alyson has made a considerable positive difference to my back pain and the cramps in my shins that I suffered from during the time I’ve been seeing her. She is very professional, warm and approachable at the same time.
"On each session, Alyson made sure to adjust the massage to concentrate on the areas where I had most pain and/or tension. I felt completely relaxed during the treatment sessions and for many days afterwards!” Roksana Cowan.
I am particularly interested in chronic stress and anxiety, persistent or long-term pain and how massage and relaxation can help someone manage theses issues.
My focus is helping you switch from ‘fight, flight or freeze’ mode to ‘rest and digest’ mode. This helps dial down the classic stress response (which we may not even be aware of being in), and thus reduce the impact on inflammation and pain in the body. When the body and mind feel more relaxed, the tightness or tension experienced in muscles or areas like shoulders can subconsciously be reduced.
My approach is less about manipulating soft tissue or specific muscles directly and more about influencing the nervous system via touch and external factors like a welcoming and safe environment where you feel able to relax.
Each session includes a brief chat at the beginning to establish what your requirements are and to check any health issues. Depending on your reason for booking a massage, I may also recommend self-care at the end of the session such as particular movements, stretches or things you can do to help feel good such as yoga breathing techniques and mindfulness.
Some typical questions about massage and the treatment session are listed further below.
You will be required to fill out a health form so that I am aware of any contraindications and we will have a chat about any issues and establish what areas you would like worked on.
Depending on which areas of the body are being massaged, you keep your underwear on, apart from bra. You will be covered with towels at all times, except for the area being massaged. I will give you privacy to undress and get dressed again.
Some people prefer to wear or bring clothes that are ok to get some residual oil on, to wear afterwards, although most of the massage oil is absorbed by your skin or can be removed with a towel prior to getting dressed again.
You will lie down on the massage table and can relax! You don’t need to do anything. Depending on the type of massage chosen and the techniques, you may need to adjust your position or I may move your limbs. You can ask questions any time during the session.
Depending on the techniques used, you will feel light, moderate or firm pressure on your muscles and body. It can feel very soothing, but if there are problematic areas, they may feel tickly, sore or slightly uncomfortable when massage techniques are used. You should not feel pain. Pain is a warning indicator that the body thinks it’s in danger. That’s the opposite of what I’m trying to achieve!
A relaxing massage, often referred to as a Swedish massage, will generally use slightly less pressure than a deep tissue or remedial massage. It is ideal for restoring health and wellbeing and aiding deep relaxation. It can help relax the central nervous system, activate your ‘rest and digest’ response, and reduce stress.
Deep tissue, remedial or sports massage are the terms used for massages which address specific issues or conditions. More pressure is often applied through different massage techniques to help restore musculoskeletal balance or contribute towards rehabilitation of sports-related or other injuries. There may be more after care advice provided such as specific stretches to help aid recovery.
From my research and learning, my approach is to promote relaxation with methods which focus on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is critical to how our body and mind manages stress and relaxation.
I do not sign up to the view of ‘no pain, no gain’. I offer relaxing, holistic massages which take into account several aspects of how you are on the day of the massage.
I’m a qualified sports massage therapist (Level 3, accredited by VTCT) but I prefer to focus on massage for relaxation and its role in our often over-sensitised nervous system, enabling people to down-regulate their stress response through relaxation.
I generally use oils such as almond or grapeseed, or blended scented oils. I can also use an unscented plain lotion if you prefer. If you are allergic to any ingredients please let me know.
Your massage will take place in a warm, quiet, private room in my house.
No, there are several medical conditions that make massage inappropriate. That's why it is necessary that you fill out the health form before you begin your session to find out if you have any contraindications to massage.
The treatment times are specified and include a short discussion about your requirements. Do allow time after the session to gather yourself together, get dressed etc. If possible, try not to have something you have to rush to following the appointment.
It is best to avoid eating up to 2 hours prior to a treatment, particularly if you are going to be lying on your front to have your back massaged.
Most people feel very relaxed immediately afterwards. Your may feel temporary sensations in some muscle areas if you have issues with those areas e.g. shoulders.
